The
SPX LIbrary participates in
Scholastic Reading Counts!. This motivational reading program encourages students to read books appropriate
to their individual reading level and the chance to demonstrate their knowledge about the book by taking Reading Counts
Quizzes.
Books in the Library that have a Reading Counts quiz have colored labels located
on their spine with 2 different numbers:
The first number is the total Reading Counts! points assigned to a book.
The second number indicates the Lexile level of the book.
example:
Every book which has a colored number sticker on the spine has a RC Quiz. Students are
tested to determine their Lexile level by taking the computerized Scholastic Reading Inventory, or
SRI.  This reading test is administered to students in grades 3-8 in the Library twice a
year and also through the Learning Support program.  The SRI assesses the student's reading comprehension level and
issues a Lexile Score.
Lexile reading levels can be tracked along grade levels, as seen in the Lexile Chart.
The 1st column relates the Lexile scores along grade levels. The Lexile framework allows for a broad
reading span, from struggling readers to advanced readers within each grade level, with helpful sample passages for each reading level.
Use the Lexile Chart to locate your child's Lexile score
and then look to the Color Label Chart to find the color sticker
that corresponds to your child's recommended reading level.
Knowing their score and corresponding sticker color suggests books they will be able to comprehend and therefore enjoy.  Reading books
on Lexile level also promotes highly proficient quiz results.  Students can read books outside their reading level as approved by Librarian and Teacher to prevent the student from consistently selecting books much below their capable reading level.
At the end of the year, the Librarian and Learning Support Teacher send home a report with SRI score results
that indicates the growth across the school year.
Teachers set goals for how many books to read each term and how many Reading Counts! points students
should achieve, in addition to offering rewards. Students who read around their Lexile level should understand what they read and should continue to improve their reading and pass their RC quizzes.
To read further about the Lexile framework, visit the Lexile site.
Once students finish a book, they can take a Reading Counts! quiz on the computer,
either in their classroom or in the Media Center. Students are congratulated at the end of the quiz, and are even
able to rate the book. Students can also view a suggested reading list of books that match their reading interests and Lexile range.
Wrong answers are able to be reviewed, and the quiz can even be taken again the following day so the student
can try and improve their results.
Students are encouraged to read at St. Pius X. Please join the faculty and I in supporting their reading adventures!
