Learning Support Bios

Sue Tanahey, M.Ed. Learning Support Coordinator

Sue has been at St. Pius X Catholic School now for four years. She is originally from Cooperstown, NY. Sue moved to Greensboro in 1981 to attend college. She received her Bachelors Degree in communication disorders. In 1994, Sue received her Masters Degree in Special Education. She holds a current NC teaching license for cross-categorical special education grades K-12. During graduate school, Sue was a substitute teacher and a teacher assistant at Gateway Education Center as well as worked as a sales clerk at Kids Lore education store.  Later, Sue worked for 4 ½ years at The Piedmont School, in High Point. After resigning from The Piedmont School, she worked at home, tutoring for two years, until a student led her to St. Pius X in 2001. Sue enjoys working with the children and helping them grow in their skills and their self-esteem. She tries to add fun and humor to the remedial tasks of the children. Sue is greatly appreciative of all she is able to do at SPX. Sue enjoys working with the students and parents at SPX. ;) Sue is the mother of two and teaches faith formation classes at St. Paul The Apostle Catholic Church. Her hobbies include skiing, painting, creating things artistically, gardening, knitting, and reading.

Cindy Basel Teacher Assistant

Cindy Basel is originally from Buffalo, NY. She is a great asset to the Learning Support Program at St. Pius X. Cindy worked as the fifth grade and middle school assistant before coming to work in the Learning Support Program. Cindy is very good with the children in the Learning Support Program. She brings a high level of motivation, energy, enthusiasm, and professionalism to the Learning Support classroom. Cindy is the mother of two and also teaches dance in her spare time. Cindy is very artistic and designs costumes for the dance studio, where she teaches.  She is surely one gifted and busy lady.

We have been fortunate this year to also have Interns from UNCG helping us with our program. We hope this symbiosis will continue in years to come. It has been wonderful for Mrs. Tanahey to have the help but also it has been wonderful for the children and the interns.

Schedule

Learning Support works daily with K-5 students through an inclusion model, a consultative model or a pull out model.

Inclusion Model = Going into the class while the classroom teacher is conducting a lesson and aid the struggling child within the classroom setting.  Sitting with the child can be an option, as well as circulating throughout the class to aid many students.

Consultative Model = Supplies teachers, and assistants with information and activities to help the struggling child.

Pullout Model = Provides remedial instruction individually in a setting away from the main classroom.

Work with Middle School Students through an inclusion or consultative model.

Learning Support Class will have open hours of 1p.m. – 3p.m. for providing Middle School Students (who have files in Learning Support), with time for individual help, computer access, or testing accommodations.

Teach weekly study skills classes to 4th and 5th grades.

Referral Process

I. Parent or teacher has a concern about student’s performance

A. Teacher and Parent conference

B. Teacher and Parent work together to implement new strategies for one month. (Document what you have implemented! If we have to refer for full evaluation this information is needed for the RE 1 form.)

C. If need be, have Learning Support teacher observe the student in class.

II. Permission to Screen

When there is still concern, after one month’s implementation of new strategies, either by parents or teachers, the teacher asks parents to sign a permission form to allow the Learning Support teacher to administer educational screenings to the student.

III. Screenings administered

By the Learning Support teacher or the counselor.

IV. Work Samples

Teacher also submits work samples to the Learning Support teacher, or completes checklists (i.e. in the case of attentional issues).

V. Conference

Meeting of parent, teachers, & Learning Support to discuss options based on screening results and implementation of strategies by parents and/or teachers.

A. If further evaluation is recommended, parent signs a two-way consent for exchange of information:

1. For private testing, all of the gathered above information is collected and sent to agency.

2. For Guilford County School System, DEC 1 and RE 1 forwarded to child’s districted school.

a. We need to attend the screening committee meeting, the evaluation results meeting and the IEP meeting.

VI. Write Student Accommodation Plan

Teachers and parents work as a team to write appropriate accommodation plans for student.

VII   Services Received

*Upon writing the accommodation plan, the decision will be made as to how the student will receive services from Learning Support. The services could be Direct through pull- out remediation,  Inclusive services with LS teacher going into the classroom, or Consultative based through activities suggested for the teacher to carry out with the student.

Children aren't seen by Learning Support unless there is a documented reason the child should be seen. (i.e. a learning disability in reading, written language, math or the presence of ADD which interferes with their learning.)
